Beware! Halloween is Approaching by Nicola Phillips

The shops are awash with spooky gear,
It must be nearing that time of the year.
When folks living in the northern hemisphere
Stock up on sweet treats but not reindeer!
Halloween is closing in fast,
That ancient Celtic festival from the past.
Samhain for the purist at heart,
Celebrating a healthy harvest is just the start.
Creating Jack O’Lanterns and dressing in disguise,
This keeps the old traditions very much alive.
But remember, when it is all said and done,
Halloween is a thin veil where you could become undone!

Mr Chirrup’s Choir by Nicola Phillips

Green faces shining under the bright moon light,
Mr Chirrup’s choir took their place; antennae and tails sitting just right.
With one final check of his red bow tie,
Mr Chirrup picked up his baton and unleashed the choir to the night sky.
Tenor, baritone and bass harmonising together as one,
The tree branch they were standing on vibrating noisily enjoying the fun.
Distant stars twinkling brightly celebrating the sound,
For Mr Chirrup’s choir was star-ward bound!
If you listen quietly and hear crickets chirping this summer season,
More than likely, Mr Chirrup’s choir might be the reason!

Granny’s Elixir by Nicola Phillips

Granny yelled crossly, “what’s all that commotion? I can hardly think.

Come inside at once, sit down and have a drink!

But first of all, go and wash your hands

Who knows what germs you’ve picked up playing in the woodlands!

So, what have you got to say for yourself my little rascal Dan?

I saw you pull your sister’s hair before she ran and ran and ran!

And you my little doll face throwing sticks is just not on,

You could have taken his eye out and we’d have Pirate John!

For the sake of world peace and anything else that matters,

You must learn to get on together or you will find your world in tatters!

Now have a cup of granny’s tea and a pumpkin scone,

You will find that after sharing a cuppa all your problems are gone!

It’s a Dogs’ Life by Nicola Phillips

Margot the Wise and Piddling Pete
Were off on an adventure, a real treat.
They met up with Toby, Rusty and Muldoon
Down at the park near the lagoon.
They sniffed each other and marked their patch
Excited to be together, a mixed breed batch.
Off they ran at an alarming pace
Helter skelter, look out everyone it was a race!
They zig zagged past pedestrians out on the street
Barking with joy, life was sweet.

They arrived at the stadium with not a moment to spare
The dignitaries had arrived and were seated on a big chair.
The dog squad breathed a collective sigh of relief
They sat down and relaxed, there was no beef!
Speaker number one got to his paws
A handsome, beagle hound named Jonathon Laws.
Jonathon Laws spoke quickly with clarity
Pointing out hazards and where things should be.
He introduced the guest speaker, speaker number two
A giant, black poodle named Rebecca Riley Sue.
Rebecca Riley Sue – a renowned show dog
Shared anecdotes and insights that she recorded on her blog.
Rebecca Riley Sue had a lot to say
Nevertheless, she paused –
And invited the dogs in the stadium to celebrate

The Tomato Wars by Nicola Phillips

Eee-ew!
Ishy, squishy tomato reeney;
Splat!
Right on my face.
Oohey, gooey tomato rooney
All over the place.
Tomato gunge in my hair,
Dangling off my shoe.
Up my nose,
Behind my ears.
What can I do?
Slushy, mushy tomato pulp
Flying through the air.
La Tomatina in full swing
This means TOMATO WARFARE!

Adeline Rose’s Birthday Party by Nicola Phillips

Adeline Rose just loved to pose,

Her mum would say, “eyes this way, chin up, that’s my girl.”

Every chance she got

Whether it was inconvenient or not.

Adeline Rose would rise to the occasion

Never once flinching, posing without persuasion.

This went on for quite some time,

Until one day, Adeline Rose refused to obey.

She had had simply enough.

No cajoling, pleading or bribing would make her sway.

Adeline Rose turned her back,

This Instagram lark was merely a hack.

Her mum was devastated but what could she do?

If Adeline Rose refused her birthday party too?

Food and drink were already bought,

“It cannot just grind to nothing – to nought?”

But Adeline Rose stuck to her guns,

No party or posing – she was done.

Adeline Rose was keen to restore

Her life as a dog and nothing more!
